When a loss doesn’t quite feel like a loss!
The first game of the season saw the Cranes take on a well-organised and skilful young Meadow Sports side at Glebelands. Conditions started warm and dry, but by the final whistle the team was battling through the familiar cold and wet; no problem for this squad.
With six debutants in the line-up, Cranleigh looked solid at the back, throwing bodies in the way when needed and showing ambition going forward. Laura, making her league debut in goal, had a confident match, pulling off fine saves and distributing well.
The difference between the sides came from an unfortunate own goal: Kelly, under pressure, dealt with a challenge but could only volley the ball past a helpless Laura. One of those moments where the alternative was likely the opposition scoring.
Cranleigh pushed hard for an equaliser, creating several chances but just unable to find the finishing touch.
Despite the scoreline, the mood is positive. The squad showed real promise, togetherness and determination, and there’s plenty to build on as the season unfolds.
