Cranleigh continued their strong start to the Surrey County Premier Football League season with a 3–2 victory over AFC Royal Holloway, a result that keeps the Cranes top of the table after two games.

The visitors struck first, taking the lead after just four minutes with a well-taken finish. But Cranleigh responded in style, sticking to their trademark short, sharp, direct football to turn the game around before half-time.

Adam Bicknell, with his second goal in as many games, and George Barrett, who converted from close range after excellent work from Sam Jones, put the Cranes firmly in control at the break.

The second half opened up, with both sides creating chances, but it was Cranleigh who extended their lead. Substitute Ciaran Lynch rose highest to meet an Isaac Collins corner, powering home a superb header that proved decisive.

A late reply from Royal Holloway narrowed the scoreline, but in truth the 3–2 result flattered the visitors.

Manager’s reaction

Joint Manager Sam Carpenter praised his side’s response after going behind:

“It wasn’t the start we wanted but credit to the lads. We knew Holloway are capable of hurting you, but after they went ahead we upped our energy and went in at the break 2-1 up.

To be honest I think we could have scored more, but super-sub Ciaran Lynch’s towering header was worthy of any match winner. We showed real energy and were worthy of the win.

There was a lot to like about this performance, but we need to make sure we’re switched on from the start. We don’t want to be conceding more early goals.”
