In a thrilling season opener Snoxhall, Cranleigh Veterans showed grit and resilience to come from behind and secure a 2-1 victory against Row United. Despite trailing midway through the second half, the Veterans mounted an impressive comeback to take all three points in their opening league fixture.
Fixtures & Results
Row United started brightly, though they failed to create any real clear-cut chances. Cranleigh slowly gained control, playing fluid football from the back and utilising the width through wingbacks Gaz Emmett and Tom Tickner. A speculative 30-yard effort from Chris Hamilton almost caught the Row keeper off guard, but the first half ended goalless.
Cranleigh’s intent was clear in the second half, with substitutes Andy Scarisbrick and Paul Inwood making an immediate impact on the flanks. Cranleigh piled on the pressure, with David Webb and skipper Micky Barbato both hitting the woodwork. Inwood’s excellent deliveries nearly led to the opener, but Scarisbrick couldn’t convert from close range. Meanwhile, the Cranleigh defence, led by McCubbin, Quinn, Booth, and keeper Horner, kept Row United at bay, with Horner making a key save to keep it 0-0.
Against the run of play, Row United took the lead in the 70th minute. A deflected long-range shot looped over Horner, who was injured in a brave attempt to save the ball. After a brief stoppage, Cranleigh regrouped, showing the new belief and spirit in the squad.
Cranleigh’s persistence paid off in the 82nd minute when Rob Jones equalised with a sharp turn and finish inside the box. Not content with a draw, Cranleigh pushed for the win, and in the 88th minute, Marc Cobby delivered a composed finish from the edge of the area, curling the ball into the bottom corner.
Man of the Match went to Paul Inwood for his tireless work and pinpoint deliveries. With contributions from the entire 16-man squad, Cranleigh Vets celebrated a well-earned 3 points and a fantastic start to the season.
